We are going to dispel wrong ideas and say it clearly: both Crosslink Foam and EVA Foam are Crosslink.

So as to begin defining the actual differences between these two products, we would like to start by defining what Crosslink is.

Crosslink equals to saying "reticulated" or "cross-linked"; this means that molecules are intertwined in the manufacturing process, thus obtaining a closed cell product with a smooth and soft to the touch appearance, and minimum absorption of liquids: Crosslink Foam.

Therefore both products, Crosslink Foam and EVA Foam, are Crosslink, the difference being which polymer is used in their formula. For Crosslink Foam, 100% Low Density Polyethylene is used, while for EVA Foam the polymer Ethyl Vinyl Acetate is used.

The main difference between these two products is the physical properties of the finished material, described in the following table:

Specification Crosslink EVA-based foam (XEVA) Crosslink polyethylene-based foam (XLPE)
Memory EVA improves the memory of the product. It easily returns to its original shape once used or pressed It has less memory, takes longer to return to its original shape once it is pressed
Density It is heavier (denser) than a polyethylene product It is lighter (less dense)
Cost Polyethylene is usually more affordable than EVA, although due to market situations (supply and demand) their prices can be very similar at times
Other physical characteristics EVA products are more malleable and resistant to breakage A more rigid material, its links are a little more fragile

Thus, if both products are Crosslink, the correct way to call them should be: Crosslink Polyethylene-based Foam (XLPE) and Crosslink EVA-based Foam (XEVA).

At Evacolors we have own formulas, over 20 years of experience, and production takes place in our own laboratory, thus we can provide you with the ideal compound of cross-linked polyethylene foam according to your business needs. Contact us for a customized advise focused on your industry.
